Not earth shattering。。。 but I did enjoy the 12 week plan!

Read it now。 An important book for our times。

I admire Dr。 Sanjay Gupta for his ability to explain medical issues so that non-medical folks like me can understand。 I had heard him interviewed on television about this new book, and having had grandparents who experienced some dementia, I wanted to know more。 The book did not disappoint。 The first third of the book is a fascinating discussion of the brain with many references to new knowledge just discovered through study during recent years。 I learned that much of what I had been taught abou I admire Dr。 Sanjay Gupta for his ability to explain medical issues so that non-medical folks like me can understand。 I had heard him interviewed on television about this new book, and having had grandparents who experienced some dementia, I wanted to know more。 The book did not disappoint。 The first third of the book is a fascinating discussion of the brain with many references to new knowledge just discovered through study during recent years。 I learned that much of what I had been taught about the brain was myth。 Gupta spent the next third of the book discussing what one could do to stave off dementia。 Again, everything he stated is supported by up-to-date research。 Finally, there is a section that includes his program for becoming healthier and staving off dementia as well as a section on how patients and caretakers can get help。 My only criticism of the book was that in places it is a little redundant。 He states over and over that one should absolutely focus on his principles of health beginning at least at age 35 -- too late for me -- but that following his plan will help anyone at any age。 I have told my adult children that they MUST read this book。 I appreciate the author's forthrightness, his warnings about everything from some useless drugs to some nursing homes, and I am very glad I read this book! 。。。more

My advice is to read this book when you’re young。 If you follow his advice now, you may add many brain-healthy years to your life。 When you’re 90, you’ll be glad you learned this when you were 30!!

I never could have imagined a clinical topic such as brain health could be so well written and easy to comprehend。 Practical solutions that anyone can incorporate into a daily lifestyle to offset the onset of cognitive disability that eventually can lead to dementia and the dreaded Alzheimer’s。 A must read if u r determined to live a long and vibrant life!

Reputed Neurosurgeon Gupta has the ability to make complex medical matters simple。 He explains things in layman's terms on TV and does so in this book also。 "Keep Sharp" scared me at first because Gupta tells us that diseases like Alzheimer's begin in our brains decades before symptoms show up and there are really no effective treatments for them。 However, the sub-title of the book "Build a Better Brain at Any Age," is reassuring and this is what we need to focus on。 Gupta has some easy exercise Reputed Neurosurgeon Gupta has the ability to make complex medical matters simple。 He explains things in layman's terms on TV and does so in this book also。 "Keep Sharp" scared me at first because Gupta tells us that diseases like Alzheimer's begin in our brains decades before symptoms show up and there are really no effective treatments for them。 However, the sub-title of the book "Build a Better Brain at Any Age," is reassuring and this is what we need to focus on。 Gupta has some easy exercises, both physical and mental, to practice that he assures us will go a long way in managing dementia。 Reading this book will definitely keep us sharp。 。。。more

Gupta is thorough, that's for sure。 Problem is, there's no way any aging person could do everything he recommends。 I think I would have liked the simpleton's version of what to do and the top 5 things we can do to ensure our brain stays sharp for as long as possible。 Gupta is thorough, that's for sure。 Problem is, there's no way any aging person could do everything he recommends。 I think I would have liked the simpleton's version of what to do and the top 5 things we can do to ensure our brain stays sharp for as long as possible。 。。。more

While this book is very informative, I think that too much information is provided。 Dr。 Gupta is presenting a background and supplemental information that, while useful, is somewhat overwhelming。 I think the book would have benefited from being pared down in the technical realm。That being said, the practical information is very useful, from prevention to dealing with people at various stages of mental impairment。 And the technical information does help build the foundation for this information, While this book is very informative, I think that too much information is provided。 Dr。 Gupta is presenting a background and supplemental information that, while useful, is somewhat overwhelming。 I think the book would have benefited from being pared down in the technical realm。That being said, the practical information is very useful, from prevention to dealing with people at various stages of mental impairment。 And the technical information does help build the foundation for this information, I think there was just too much of it。Also, the every two-week step process for improvement seems overly ambitious for anyone trying to make serious behavior changes。 I think the recommendations and timeline would have benefited from the input of a professional on the most effective way to establish new habits。 The behavior changes all make sense, and are solidly based。 I just think the "expected" rate of change is unrealistic。All in all, this is good, solid information that should be getting to someone in their 20's, 30's, and 40's, much less us older folks。I listened to the audio version of this book。 As an author reading his own material, Dr。 Gupta does an excellent job - as good as any professional narrator。 But, I would recommend a print version of this book because of all the resources cited。 。。。more

"Keep Sharp" encourages you get healthier, and by extension, to ward off ALZHEIMER'S。Outside of exercise, sleep and eating better, Gupta underscores social connections as a way of escaping dementia。Not much new in this book; I learned that my nap times could be a sign of Alzheimer's; thx a lot, Sanjay。Time for a nap。 "Keep Sharp" encourages you get healthier, and by extension, to ward off ALZHEIMER'S。Outside of exercise, sleep and eating better, Gupta underscores social connections as a way of escaping dementia。Not much new in this book; I learned that my nap times could be a sign of Alzheimer's; thx a lot, Sanjay。Time for a nap。 。。。more

Great, interesting detail and facts to back up the storyline。 A little too many facts and studies on two chapters; diet and help source。 Twelve week program is an interesting approach to preventive steps to follow and improve your brain functions。

Sanjay Gupta has a knack for explaining complex issues。 This book has a section on how the brain works; A 12 week program for improving brain health; and an interesting discussion of how to deal with Alzheimers。 The suggestions are practical and Gupta is accepting of individual variations in behavior。 His presentation of research is clear and informative。The book is chock full of ideas and resources including suggestions about how to deal with better brain health and also some ideas about coping Sanjay Gupta has a knack for explaining complex issues。 This book has a section on how the brain works; A 12 week program for improving brain health; and an interesting discussion of how to deal with Alzheimers。 The suggestions are practical and Gupta is accepting of individual variations in behavior。 His presentation of research is clear and informative。The book is chock full of ideas and resources including suggestions about how to deal with better brain health and also some ideas about coping with a relative or friend who is drifting into dementia。 。。。more

As a future physician, I think this book has a great combination of scientific analysis and laymen terms。 It is perfect for people who would want to know more about their health and how they can approach being partners with their healthcare providers。 Would recommend for people who have a family history of dementia or people who'd like to just know more about brain health! Interesting read。 Lots of good practical advice on how to keep your brain sharp - most of it common sense, but he presents a good framework on how to incorporate good habits into daily life。 Talks about nutrition, sleep, life long learning, exercise and socialization - all which are important as we age。 Worth reading。

Although I knew what Dr。 Gupta was going to say, move/socialize/cut sugar and fat/well balanced meals/sleep/work and try new things, it was good to hear it again and the science behind his recommendations。 He thinks, "90% of our health and longevity is in our hands。" Hmmm:-) Although I knew what Dr。 Gupta was going to say, move/socialize/cut sugar and fat/well balanced meals/sleep/work and try new things, it was good to hear it again and the science behind his recommendations。 He thinks, "90% of our health and longevity is in our hands。" Hmmm:-) 。。。more

Either I am sharper than I thought or Dr。 Gupta's recommendations were just too common sense based。 I did not find anything earth shattering in this book。 I feel I was already practicing his recommendations before he even told me。。。if only I would have thought to write the book first! This was a comprehensive and engaging book。 While I did learn some new things, the key points were nothing new。 That said, just because I know what I 'should' do, doesn't mean I actually do it。 This was a good reminder for me to alter some of my less healthy habits for better long-term health。 Dr。 Gupta covers the basics like sleep, nutrition, meditation, and more, and I thought it was just enough detail for the purposes of this book and for the general audience。 If you want a deeper dive on any This was a comprehensive and engaging book。 While I did learn some new things, the key points were nothing new。 That said, just because I know what I 'should' do, doesn't mean I actually do it。 This was a good reminder for me to alter some of my less healthy habits for better long-term health。 Dr。 Gupta covers the basics like sleep, nutrition, meditation, and more, and I thought it was just enough detail for the purposes of this book and for the general audience。 If you want a deeper dive on any specific topic or feel like you already know the basics, you might want a book with a more narrow focus (e。g。 Why We Sleep by Dr。 Walker if you're specifically interested in sleep)。 I liked that Dr。 Gupta specifically combatted myths with evidence-based truths and I really appreciated his focus on dementia, especially towards the end of the book。 He even offers practical and encouraging advice to family members who are caring for loved ones with dementia。 I listened to an audiobook version of this book so I could enjoy it while taking walks and Dr。 Gupta does a great job narrating。 I think I would have enjoyed it just as well if I read a physical copy。 。。。more

Dr。 Gupta offers hope for keeping your brain sharp and healthy irrespective of age。As a person interested in health promotion, I appreciated the book's emphasis on promotion of brain health and prevention of dementia。Gupta addresses in detail what he calls the five pillars of brain health: exercise and movement; sense of purpose, discovery and learning; sleep and relaxation; nutrition; and social connection。 Some of Dr。 Gupta's suggestions, particularly for social connection, are a little harder Dr。 Gupta offers hope for keeping your brain sharp and healthy irrespective of age。As a person interested in health promotion, I appreciated the book's emphasis on promotion of brain health and prevention of dementia。Gupta addresses in detail what he calls the five pillars of brain health: exercise and movement; sense of purpose, discovery and learning; sleep and relaxation; nutrition; and social connection。 Some of Dr。 Gupta's suggestions, particularly for social connection, are a little harder to implement during a pandemic。While some of this information was not new to me, I found the sections on exercise and sleep and its benefits to be most interesting。 I have an even greater respect for the restorative powers of sleep。 。。。more

Very informative, though parts of it are a bit technical for me。 It offers a lot of good suggestions and tips on how to keep the brain sharp at any age, i。e。, exercise routinely, learn new things, meditate, sleep well, avoid certain medications (makes you think again about taking certain over the counter drugs such as benadryl), keep a gratitude journal, and stick to a SHARP diet。

I was expecting great things from this book, but was a little disappointed。 It was nothing I hadnt heard before。 There were one or two new facts but that was about it。 I also thought it was a bit long, there was a lot of 'I'm going to tell you about。。。'。 However saying that, it does make you want to implement new habits and again shows you the importance of daily choices!
